After graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 2013 I had one goal—to move to New York City and get a job as a writer in the magazine industry. So with the confidence one only has in your early twenties, I moved to NYC with two suitcases and no job or place to live. For two weeks, I lived in an extended stay hotel in Hell’s Kitchen and pounded the pavement. Funny thing is (or not so funny), I was caught in a major catch-22—in order to secure an apartment here, you have to have a job (plus make 40 times the rent, sign over your firstborn child, etc. etc.) and to have a job, it’s really important to have a place to live. Finally, in one of those classic NYC moments, a friend of a friend (of a friend) set me up with a six month sublet in Alphabet City, and my new roommate happened to know someone who worked at Lucky magazine.
