Welcome to my book of the month column, where I recommend my couldn’t-put-it-down read of the month. Need more book recommendations? Find them here. Happy reading!
When my friends suggested a book club themed solely around murder mystery/thriller/true crime novels, I was immediately in. Appropriately christened the “F**ked Up Fiction Book Club,” Leila Slimani’s The Perfect Nanny became our April read.
Loosely based off of the New York Nanny Murder Trial, Slimani’s slim read (it’s only 235 pages) is dark and disturbing, without leaning too heavily into Gillian Flynn levels of gore. It reads more as an exploration of class, race and the realities of motherhood, resulting in a psychological thriller that deep dives into each character.
Read because: It’s eerie and chilling without being overtly blood-soaked.
