The last few days before a trip are always a whirlwind, what with collecting last minute items and trying to fit everything in a suitcase. My least favorite part of preparing for a trip used to be packing my toiletries—since I use everything almost every day, it eliminated the possibility of really packing (aka bag IN suitcase) beforehand. Instead, it always got thrown in right before I left for the airport.
Ever since I started traveling more, I knew something had to change in my packing strategy. The best way to get rid of that pre-airport panic? Keep a “go” bag ready at all times.
Living in my bathroom cabinet, I have two packed toiletry bags ready to go with every travel size item I’ll need for my trip. The first bag is for my backpack—this has every essential item. Think toothpaste, contact solution, deodorant…basically anything that I might need immediate access to on the plane or in the airport, or in the case of longer trips when I have a checked suitcase, the items that would be a problem if my suitcase got lost.
My second toiletry bag has everything that I don’t need access to, that can go in the overhead bin or cargo. This includes shampoo and conditioner (since every hotel has these staples) and non-essential hair styling products and skincare.
My biggest travel tip is to not wait until you’re leaving for a new trip to re-stock. As soon as I get back from traveling, I take stock of what’s low, and add those items to my Target list and pick them up the next time I’m there. This strategy means I always have every item I need before I even start packing.
Here’s a travel checklist of what goes where:
Medicine / First Aid (TUMS, Zyrtec, Advil, Emergen-C, Band-Aids etc.)
Shampoo and conditioner
Hair styling cream
I know that travel size products are more expensive than full size when you compare price per ounce. However, after traveling so much I can say the incremental cost difference is definitely outweighed by how much space you save. Not to mention having these go bags ready means you can always bring a carry on without having to leave any of your favorite products behind. Shop my favorites of each in the slideshow below!
